Message from Shihan
My name is Doug Adamson and I am the founder of Adamson's Karate Studios. Everyone around here calls me by my title of "Shihan."
Over the last 40 years I have seen a common theme run through individuals and families as they express to me their interest in our school. There are at least six different reasons that people knock on our door. See if your interest matches one or more of these.

High school and College coaches love our students' athletic ability, discipline, competitiveness, focus and fearlessness and all of this from students who, by all rights, should not be varsity material. You may have other reasons to seek us out but these are the common ones.

If every program that makes this claim really accomplished it, there would not be such a culture wide problem with this! We currently have 8 schools and 40 years of reputation which continues to prove we do what we claim. ADD issues? Common place! Other issues? Self discipline self discipline! Or maybe it is self control? I don’t know, can you help? (please)
Self Discipline and Self Control are closely linked but they are not the same thing. In our program we teach that Self Discipline is the motor of your life’s race car and Self Control is the brakes. It is Self Discipline that makes you set your alarm and get going in the morning. The night before, it is Self Control that helps you to avoid staying out to the wee hours of the morning.
We teach both.
Controlling the mind in a physical confrontation is a core skill in self defense because you cannot allow your mind to “break.” In this case you have to be able to talk to yourself instead of listening to your fears. Developing this skill makes you very strong. However, without also teaching our students Self Control we could be developing bullies.
In 40 years no one has ever told us we turned their child into a bully. Thousands have told us that they or their child has more Self Discipline than ever before.
Can you help someone who has no athletic ability? I mean a real “couch potato” who has trouble walking
and chewing gum at the same time?
We are one of the few places in our society where we don’t “cut” the poor achievers from the team or relegate them to the minor leagues. We are in the business of training couch potatoes to be varsity level players. That is for real.
Some people just lower the standards and put the person on the varsity team. That doesn't work, does it, because you can’t fool the arena full of people? Everyone knows the person is being outclassed by the opposition.
Our AKS Black Belt Test is just like that. You have to look like you belong out there.
We make varsity players out of people who are not! We are patient enough and have the tools to do so. We just want a student who won’t quit and will keep moving forward.
I am just interested in some self defense.
What do you mean by that? Does training realistically how not to get hit qualify for self defense?
Does learning how to use punches, kicks, elbows, and knees, and literally all of your body as a means to protect yourself qualify for self defense?
Does learning how to throw and grapple qualify?
How about how to defend against weapons?
How about effectively defending yourself against multiple attackers?
If things like this qualify for self defense, then "enough said."
Telling you about all the ways we will be working on your self defense would just scare you, so "enough said."
Whatever the reason or reasons just call for a free class.
